Early Years Foundation Stage

At Scallywags Nursery, we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), a government framework that supports children’s learning and development from birth to five years old. The EYFS provides a strong foundation for children’s future learning, ensuring they develop key skills, knowledge, and confidence in a fun and engaging way.

The EYFS sets out four guiding principles:

  • A Unique ChildWe celebrate each child as an individual, supporting their personal interests and learning style.

  • Positive RelationshipsOur caring and highly qualified team builds warm, trusting relationships with children and families.

  • Enabling EnvironmentsWe provide a rich, nature-inspired environment where children can explore, play, and discover at their own pace.

  • Learning and DevelopmentThrough hands-on experiences, outdoor adventures, and creative activities, we support children to thrive across all areas of learning.

The EYFS also sets out seven areas of learning:

  • Prime Areas:

    • Communication and LanguageThrough storytelling, songs, and conversations, we develop children’s speaking and listening skills.

    • Physical DevelopmentOutdoor play, climbing, and nature walks help develop coordination, strength, and fine motor skills.

    • Personal, Social, and Emotional DevelopmentChildren build confidence, resilience, and friendships through group activities and free exploration.

  • Specific Areas:

    • LiteracyWe foster a love for reading and mark-making through nature-inspired activities, storytelling, and child-led writing opportunities.

    • MathematicsCounting leaves, measuring sticks, and exploring patterns in nature make maths fun and engaging.

    • Understanding the WorldChildren learn about the seasons, wildlife, and the environment through hands-on experiences in our outdoor setting.

    • Expressive Arts and DesignWe use natural materials for creative projects, encouraging imagination and self-expression.

We work closely with parents to ensure every child’s development is supported both at nursery and at home. We provide regular updates, observations, and ideas for home learning.
